Dr. Gelhman sees Mike for the first time after he installed MC's Frame.

Hello again - this is my second post this morning.  I wanted to separate the fun and family visits from what the Doctor has to say.  This was a huge visit, since it was the first time Mike has seen Dr. Gelhman himself since the frame was put on last Tuesday the 24th.  Timing is everything and although I missed Dr. Dustin's dressing change and comments - which I hear were ALL very positive regarding the flap, I was there for Dr. G and this is what his comments brought.

The frame looks great. Mike has no pain associated with it and that's perfect.  His foot is suspended inside of it, so it feels a little strange from hour to hour.  Dr. Gelhman's next step is to insert wires into Mike's heel bone and add a weight bearing / walking device to the bottom of his frame. That surgery date is expected to be in approximately 2 weeks or October 14th. He wants Dr. Frome's work (Mike's Free Flap) to be well established before placing wires into the middle of it and out again on the other side.

He is very optimistic regarding the work the frame will do in bringing Mike's foot back to a position that will enable him to walk on it again.  He told Mike that he would be teaching him how to adjust the tension on the frame daily in an effort to keep moving the foot upward to a desirable position.  He will require some rehab with some PT's
that specialize in this type of frame rehab.  That's who Dr. G. will line Mike up with.

Dr. Gelhman taking a look at Mike's frame for the first time since his surgery on the 24th.
Dr. Gelhman explaining some of the rehab that will be needed since Mike's femur was severely fractured just above the knee where he is marking.  A rod was inserted and 4 screws were inserted into Mike's knee in order to keep everything in place. (that happened July 31st on accident day)  Femur is healed but rehab will be a huge part and not too far off.

More tonight in my "before the surgery" update.

Love and hugs, SB & MC
